Balsamorhiza Macrophylla

Balsamorhiza Macrophylla, also known as the cutleaf balsamroot, is a robust perennial herb native to Idaho, Utah, Montana and Wyoming. Resembling that of a small sunflower, the cutleaf stands approximately 2-3 feet tall from a massive tap root, possessing bright yellow flowers with green, medium textured foliage. Late spring bloom allows hikers and bikers alike to enjoy the sunny herb as it grows on hillsides and in open woods. Although this herb has low drought tolerance, it has adapted to growth in either coarse, fine or medium textured soils. Native Americans have used the cutleaf as a food source in the past, as it is palatable to humans. So the next time you are camping and need a an edible garnish, look for Balsamorhiza macrophylla and entertain your friends.
