"Alnus" is the ancient Latin name for the tree, and "incana" is Latin for "gray or hairy". Commonly known as the “Grey Alder” or “Speckled Alder” is a deciduous tree or shrub that is a member of the Birch family, and is a fast growing tree for cold and wet locations. The Alnus' lifespan ranges from 60-100 years. This small to medium perennial is a dicot plant, which grows to heights of approximately 15-20 meters tall. It has smooth grey bark and obtuse green matte leaves, which are grey on their underside. They are broad with toothy edges. These leaves tend to turn yellow in the fall. Active growth period is during the spring and summer where it maintains a high carbon to nitrogen ratio. There is a low seed/fruit abundance in spring and ends in the summer. It is found near streams and rivers, and is known to have a low tolerance for drought, but it has also adapted to grow in locations with drier climates. It can be found in elevations up to 1500 meters.
